The Canal Side Guest House is located in Lehighton, just four miles downstream of Jim Thorpe, PA. We are at mile marker 102 of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D & L) trail.  Nearby are  many outdoor activities.

     Bicycling is the predominent near year round activity.   Ski resorts near us are Blue Mountain Ski Area and Big Boulder/Jack Frost.  Hiking can be found at Beltzille State Park, the Nature Center (where the Apalachian trail intersects our trails), Mauch Chunk County Lake Park, and Hickory Run State Park.

    Whitewater rafting and kayaking is nearby on the Lehigh River.  You can paddle nearby for calmer waters or go up into Lehigh Gorge State Park. There are four major rafting companies.  From nearest to farthest from our house, they are Jim Thorpe River Adventures, now located at the Lehighton Outdoor Center, Whitewater River Adventures, Pocono Whitewater, and Whitewater Challengers.  Most of these companies will also offer a bicycle shuttle service.  We can also arrange a shuttle for you as along it's not within Lehigh Gorge State Park or if we are not charging . For those of you who enjoy exploring on your own,check out  our local parks.  The two state parks that our guests love are Beltzville and Hickory Run.  Our county park is Mauch Chunk County Park where there are hiking trails, a sand beach, a bike trail, and boat rentals. We also are not far from the Appalachian Trail which crosses through at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center.  

     In addition to the many wonderful outdoor features,  our area has  a rich history.  Jim Thorpe boasts numerous excursions and tours  for the history buff.  Many people enjoy  coming to Jim Thorpe The fall is especially busy due to the ghost tours and tours of the jail.   The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad offers excursions and bike train shuttle services.
